Listen to the transitions as well as the tracks
How several records become a single sequence with a dramatic shape of its own.
A DJ set invites a different scale of attention from an individual single. One track can gradually hand its rhythm, bass or mood to the next. A quiet passage does not necessarily mean a loss of energy: sometimes it clears space for what comes afterwards.
Listen to a transition without trying to locate its boundary immediately. Does the previous hi-hat remain while the bass changes? Does a new texture appear before a new kick? When parts overlap, several minutes can belong to two records at once, and a familiar track may feel different because of its neighbour.
After listening, try describing the set's path in three words, such as restrained, dense, spacious. A brief note like this can help you remember the character of a DJ's work. For further discoveries, look for a tracklist or the show's page on the broadcaster's website: contributors and the names of records used are often listed there.
