The synthesizer as an instrument of movement
Sound source, filter and envelope: three ideas that help make electronic parts easier to follow.
In a simple account of a synthesizer, a source generates a waveform, a filter changes its spectral content and an envelope determines how a parameter changes over time. Yamaha uses these concepts in its glossary of synthesis. Actual instruments differ in design, but this set of ideas is a useful starting point for a listener.
Try to distinguish pitch from tone colour. A repeating note can stay at the same pitch while gradually becoming brighter or more muted. That is already a noticeable musical development, even though the melody has not changed. A sharp, short attack and a slow build also give the same sequence very different characters.
In a club recording, the synthesizer often enters into a conversation with the drums, answering with a short pulse or holding a long line above the beat. Pick one part and follow whether its notes, duration or timbre change. This habit reveals details even in a spare arrangement with only a few instruments.
